This morning, I met with 75 percent of the Backstreet Boys (Nick Carter, AJ McLean, and Howie Dorough) while their swine flu-stricken groupmate Brian Littrell rested in his hotel room.
They were supposed to have performed on CBS’ The Early Show, but instead they were gulping tea in their hotel lobby and praying they don’t get sick as well. I asked them about their scrapped PR plans, their new light-hearted outlook on their careers, and why they agreed to be Auto-tuned on one track on their new record, This Is Us. Then I bathed in Purell. [Read More]

The best song on Backstreet Boys' new album "This Is Us" is also by far the weirdest and creepiest. "PDA," an ode to the pleasure of public groping, splits the difference between the exhibitionist euphoria of Usher's "Love in This Club" and Andy Samberg's "Saturday Night Live" skit about the travails of overly, um, sensitive men, the title of which cannot be reprinted in a family newspaper.
Coming from a band better known for its blow-out Max Martin ballads, it should be an embarrassing bit of lechery -- apparently even the grocery store is an acceptable forum for feelin' on a target's booty. [Read More]

The kids who listened to the Backstreet Boys at the height of their 100-million-plus record-selling fame in the mid- and late-1990s are busy establishing their careers and buying the first condo. It's a stressful time, so maybe they're interested in the soft-pop their old friends A.J., Nick, Brian and Howie (Kevin took off three years ago) keep pumping out.
The quartet's latest, 12-tune album is like a warm cup of flavoured instant latte: sweet, a little frothy, mildly stimulating – and eminently forgettable. Although there's a bit less rock and a touch more pop and R&B here compared to the previous album, Unbreakable, nothing sounds truly original. A lot of it is coloured in `80s retro hues. [Read More]

The newest CD from the Backstreet Boys features a number of uptempo, club-sounding songs - but the weak effort from this quartet won't have you running to the dance floor.
"This Is Us," the group's seventh studio album, is full of boring, uneventful tracks - though hitmaking producers like RedOne, T-Pain, Jim Jonsin and Ryan Tedder help out.
What may be most disappointing is that Swedish producer Max Martin - who helmed classic grooves for the boy band like "I Want it That Way" and "Everybody (Backstreet's Back)" - fails to present anything as addictive on "This Is Us." [Read More]
